StegFS : A Steganographic File System for Linux

Update :

Andreas and i are not able to spend enough time into this project and we are both broken-hearted because we really want to keep it alive. Everyone out there who is interested in kernel / filesystem developing or is willing to jump into the cold water is really welcome. We need developers in first place and the best thing would be if we can find someone who wants to be developing project leader ! There are a few interested people on the developer mailing list and we also wrote some ideas down for stegfs. Thats the status quo right now.

Project Description :

StegFS is a Steganographic File System for Linux. Not only does it encrypt data, it also hides it such that it cannot be proved to exist. The data can only be read by providing a correct passphrase. It provides a set of different security levels.

Mission Statement :

First we are going to patch out the actual StegFS from Andrew D. McDonald, which is already done by Andrew from our point of view. If you need a 2.0 linux kernel compatible StegFS, you can get it at http://www.mcdonald.org.uk/StegFS/

The next step is the complete rewrite of StegFS, based on the ideas from the papers below and our own. We want to become the "officical continuation" of the StegFS implementation from Andrew D. McDonald and Markus G. Kuhn. Our main mission goals are 2.6 linux kernel compatibility, security optimisation, performance optimisation and a better functionality. We think that it is not realistic anymore to plan a 2.4 linux kernel compatibility.

We also had some discussions about other OS ports and it was generally agreed that it wouldn't be a big mistake to have a Windows port of StegFS, sometime, somehow, somewhere. Any other questions regarding other OS ports are useless at this time because our first priority is the linux implementation.
